Set in the Mayan civilization, when a man's idyllic presence is brutally disrupted by a violent invading force, he is taken on a perilous journey to a world ruled by fear and oppression where a harrowing end awaits him. Through a twist of fate and spurred by the power of his love for his woman and his family he will make a desperate break to return home and to ultimately save his way of life

Comments:

Although criticized by others to be not what they expected, I thorougly enjoyed this movie as it brought together culture and one man's struggle to survive against the greater odds. Mel gibson was able to endow his film with great empathy towards the main actor the protagonist.

Moments that captured the essence of both the civilised yet barbaric nature of the mayan culture was evident in scenes such as the -

human sacrafices, ripping their heart out whilst alive
Sewing wounds with leaf cutter ants

This movie was enjoyable for me and deserves the 4/5 stars.

i thought the action was great, i wouldnt watch it again though... but it was worth watching once, and yeah i thought it showed quite well how they could be caring for people they knew yet absolutely brutal to other humans.
