View Full Version : S.T.A.L.K.E.R - Shadows of Chernobyl
Post Apocalyptic settings are fantastic for games; when Stalker was announced in 2001 I was fucking keen... it's taken them 6 years to finally get it out the door, but unlike most other vapor ware, STALKER is actually pretty damn good....
Sort of a story driven FPS, it has RPG elements (primarily aquiring and upgrading weapons and equipment and doing side quests) though no system of characteristic advancement. I've been playing it since monday night, and really enjoying it. There are some parts a bit like System Shock 2, other bits that remind me of F.E.A.R... and one of the best aspects is that there are a metric fucktonne of different weapons. Something like 15 different assault rifles alone!
Anyway, I'm enjoying this game, thought I'd mention it and give it the thumbs up for the rest of the clan.

STALKER, made in RUSSIA. oh yeah!!!! is it any good???
Like I said, I think it's pretty cool. It's got some issues, but nothing game breaking. Cool visuals, lots of gunz...
It was actually developed like 30km from the Chernobyl site.

Played it for at LEAST seven whole seconds, then got bored. :P
I don't usually do single player, but it's probably one of the better ones I've seen (Alongside Oblivion and Hitman 4).

I never played it, but no doubt this game isnt doing the world any good with all this anti-nuclear OMG CHERNOBYL crap, therefore its crap :P
but how long does it take to finish the game? I might get it if i find a cheap version, but only if its >50 hours
Yeah, Kevin Rudd talked about it in Parliment a few days ago...
"Australia should be looking at reducing it's reliance on nuclear power; I have been playing S.T.A.L.K.E.R and it is clear that nuclear power plants are prone to blowing up and creating all these crazy anomolies and mutants and shit"
Or something like that :)

hmmm... Can't c kevin rudd playing STALKER, but hey, i don't know they guy. Maybe he like pwns at all games lol.
But yeah, STALKER looks good. Even better cuz it doesn't require you to be online to get the most out of it (god damn slow internet and parents who hate violent games).

Its one of the better single player FPS around and the best one in a few years imo but it could have been heaps better.
What i was most disappointed in was how small the game world was. Almost each area had a different environment and some like the town section in between the bar and yantar were way too small to bother looking at after the first time through. It would have been great if the world was 2 or 3 times the size to expand these areas, make exploring a possibility and Link each section so you dont always have to go on the one path to get somewhere.
The other thing i didnt like was how linear the game was. It would have been heaps better if they let you go basically anywhere (up to the BS) you wanted right from the start instead of forcing you to do quests to access new places.
Yeah, the level of freedom was seriously reduced from what they said back in 2001. What I didn't like is that there is very little reward for exploring...

that was just it though - they admitted they fucked up the production of the game cos they tried to put too much into it upfront.
so it's setup now for a good sequel ;)
also - if you want to have a challenge/make guns more accurate etc... try modding the game - makes it WAY better imo... I tried out a whole bunch of these and wish I'd had them the first time round...

Yeah it should be good, But it'll still probably have the same things i disliked about not having enough areas. It sort of ruined the atmosphere for me having interesting areas so small. Then having so much unused space on the map.
A sequel should be good though because the story was fairly good generally and the indoor areas were great. But the outdoor space let it down. Had they made another 6 random areas in the game world around the bar that interconnected different areas instead of nothing, the game would probably have been the best ever.

5th of June for the Fallout 3 teaser! Considering how close Stalker is to the Fallout franchise, I'll bet the folks at Bethesda have had a good, long look at what stalker does well, and what it does poorly.
I think a combination of the richness and depth of the fallout world with the grittiness and well... first person shooteriness of Stalker would be very, very good. So long as they don't screw it up...

I got hold of this game about 1 month or so ago and played it through 3 times to start with.
1st time round i rushed through it, didnt do much exploring or small missions, just following the basic paths and stuff. I went to the wish granter and wished that the Zone went away... WHAT A BORING ENDING!
2nd time i did a bit more but still went to the wish granter (didnt know any different at this stage). I some how wished to be rich... another gay ending.
3rd time i found the secret room and got some closure on things and chose to Join them... meh.
4th time decided NOT to join em and went teleporting everywhere.
On the 4th time i had a Mod / Hack thingy that game me full health, full ammo, one shot kill, no weight and something else. Using that was great as i explored HEAPS more not having to worry about weight, health and stuff. Just explored and got alot more out of the game.
I am tempted to do it again but dont know what to do differently to get another different ending. And, having the net back makes me play online games more. The things you do when you have no net :)
A good game, that ran resonably well on my system with some eye candy turned down. The ONLY RPG / FPS game that i have played before and i thoroughy enjoyed it.
Anyways, thats my babble about it. IMO, worth a look if your after a good change from the BF scene and a bit more depth.
Enjoy,
