Heres the dealio. I am currently running an old fairly piece of shit hunk o' crap and I'm looking for an upgrade. Not something immediately (maybe in a month or so, when I have the money - I can't really get work around here because I live away from town) but I'm just checking on things I should look out for...What chipsets, card models and that sort of thing.

I've been out of the techno loop (especially video cards) since just after core2duo came out...

My current set up is:
AMD 3000+ socket 939
2gb of now non-functioning dual channel ddr400.
single 7800 OC'd to some retarded specs - its basically a 7900 running without the last 4 pipes.

I have an SLI motherboard, so I was planning to just get another 7800 from a second-hand private sale...but then I realised it wasn't the videocard, it was my ram and cpu. The ram itself is, for some reason or another, running at 64-bit speed after I blew up my PSU.

I also have a 4800+ dual core 939 laying around here somewhere...I probably left it at home...But I need a cooler for that before I do anything with it.

Should I find a cooler for it, slap it on, then try and replace the ram with 256-bit ddr400 (If they even fucking sell anymore) and maybe find a bigger psu. The one I blew up was 550w (It made a fairly impressive pop) and I'm using a 430w atm. Would it be a good idea to upgrade this as well?

TL;DR: I'm looking for new/upcoming chipsets/card models and advice on upgrading as high as my board will let me go (ddr400, socket 939, SLI)

EDIT: Clearly not worth the effort, fuck it.

phenom fail actually compared to well any of the intel quads

Upgrade mobo,
Upgrade Ram with new mobo (saves money as DDR is more $$ than DDR2)
Upgrade to intel CPU

and ur set :)

Screw SLI, upgrade other parts :)

Its probably a good idea log to set a price range so these guys don't go and tell you to buy something that you can't afford.

Upgrade mobo,
Upgrade Ram with new mobo (saves money as DDR is more $$ than DDR2)
Upgrade to intel CPU

This would cost him what? Atleast $500????

Cost is clearly his biggest issue otherwise im sure he would be asking what to buy instead of how to upgrade what he has.

Is there anything he can do with what he currently has (incl that 4800+) that would still give him a decent upgrade but at a much cheaper price?

What he said. and to further that AMD is just fail all over.

their good in the really low end sort of standard desktop stuff, but gaming and high power users should steer clear

Seriously.... get real... Not everyone has $1500 so spend on a top end Intel chip and really noone has $500 to spend on a quad core Intel... But many people can afford an AMD quad core retailing around $300 bucks.

If you can prove to me that for an extra 150-200 bucks you get oh so much better performance in game then I will rip out my cpu hit it with a hammer, bend all the pins, feed it to the dog next door, and then throw it into the bay!

You seruiously wont be able to.... Just read toms hardware, read the comparrisons, see the benchmarks..... OMG the extra cash got me 120 frames a sec compared to my 110 frames on his POV ... AMD..... whoopty freaking doo...!!

I like AMD, I am a fanboy.....But its the facts. Get over Intel, because next week they will chance the playform / form factor and next upgrade you will need another new MOBO and ram.

At least AMD tend to stick with things longer than 6 months..

EDIT: Latest prices (www.msy.com.au)
AMD Phenom 9600 Quad core (fastest they have in stock): $278
Intel Q6700 Quad core : $678

3D Mark Score:
Phenom: 10477
Q6700: 11474

1000 points difference... Sounds alot... But realise it just cost you $400 to get an extra 1000 3d mark score. AND at that level the only difference is a marginal increase in framerate.

So seriously. Get over bagging AMD.

explain what intel hasn't stuck with?

how long was socket 939 out for, what like a year or 2.

775 has been out for about 3.

the E6750 shits on the entire Athlon x2 line and RRP's for about 300 bucks, you can usually get it for quite a bit less too. how exactly is that $1500.

So we arent talking about quad cores anymore? Sorry i must have missed you admitting I was right....

Sure the E6750 is a good cpu but it was released a lot later than the X2's were, and anyone can make better given time...(not to mention the same arguement applies... AMD's are cheaper and still give decent bang for buck.)

Oh and just checked.... Intel E6750's = Mid range Dualcores so therefore AMD X2 5200's = Midrange AMD

Price check on reality: E6750 = $228 AMDX2 5200 = $133 (PLEASE EXPLAIN!)
Seriously..... $100 worth of more power.... I dont think so.

When you buy a INTEL CPU and MOBO and new RAM, and then it sits around $1500 bucks ($1200 - 1500) whereas you can put together a classy AMD for less than Half that! (Having done that 2 weeks ago for less than $650) ....(assuming you want to buy half decent gear) with minimal loss of gaming grunt....

Prove it to me how much better they are?

Show me some hard evidence!

Not just that they are better... cos I said so.

THE END.

(Dog lived happily ever after.)

i was directing that to your whole you have to spend 1500 on any intel chip.

also, you realise that by comparing the Q6600 to a Phenom is a stupid comparision since the Q6600 came out like what, a year beforehand?

I hope you realise I am yanking your chain....

If you havent worked it out by NOW.

I love my PC.... I DONT care if you dont like it! I am simply using info I had on hand.... As I was researching this 2 weeks ago. And have been trying to get you to waste time. But alas you wont bite.

I dont care if everyone else in the world changed to Intel. I really dont. because I would still be playing the games I want to on my AMD.

OK then if its so old... why is it sooooo expensive? Maybe its antique?

Ill tell you what.... next time I need an upgrade. Ill get you to pick it out for me. Because I am obviously to stupid to work it out. Although I have presented a reasonable arguement.

Actually Ill finish this for good.... (a little playground rhyme)

AMD are great ... Intel are Poo..... I feel sorry for you... Cos you dont have one too!

Tadaahhhh!

I win cos I am dog.

Guys....Just fuck up. I don't care about brand loyalty at all. And I'm sure that...1 person actually read my post?

I'm broke as a cunt. My income comes from centrelink, because I can't get a job for at least another 6 months or so. So, I'm looking for suggestions as to what to do in the meantime - Where to get a decent cooler, what 939 cpus are going for (which ones to look for as well) and what vcard chipsets to look out for.

I am not going to change my motherboard. Get it through your heads - Tell me what I can do with my current board, ok?

Maniacdog

Its called Google. Log.

Use it.

Step 1 - Open web browser
Step 2 - Type www.google.com
Step 3 - In the search bar type in the motherboard model and name
Step 4 - Read
Step 5 - Find out what CPU your board can take (might need a BIOS flash)
Step6 - If you need said bios flashed, goto the 'insert motherboard manufacturers name" and find the right software
Step 7 - If step 6 isnt required. Then open up another browser window and type www.staticice.com.au and then type in the model of the CPU you want to buy that suits your MOBO
Step 8 - make the order, or call them up
Step 9 - Is either: Wait for delivery or Go Pick it up (dependant on Step 8)
Step 10 - Is install the bloody thing and get over it.

Alternative is to -

Step 11 - Sell a kidney of yours and buy an Intel CPU and MoBo and become a sheep..... ahhahahahahha..

OH God I must stop ... I am tooooo funny!

Lol :S okay enough ranting about AMD and Intel - Log wants a hand, not people arguing over which is better.

Stay on topic from now please...

Log - look at www.itestate.com.au . They have the best prices that I have found in Aus.

PSU wise, if its a good brand, 430W is fine, i'm running a dual core , 4 HDD's, 4GB of ram and a 8800GT off a 430W Antec NeoPower so you'd be good there.

also, itestate is cheap yes, but horrible service like most of the warehouse computer stores.

I am about to follow your advice right now...I'm sitting in my uni lab bored out of my mind because class doesnt start for another hour and a half =/.

I'll get back to you with the details.

EDIT: Ok, so my board can take dual core 939 chipsets (I have one already - the 4800+ I was talking about) so I just need to find a cooler and some new RAM. Looks like I'll have to find someone stocking ddr400 =[

EDIT2: Would my 430w power the dual core? It seems to do my current system ok...Apart from the fact that it only powers a single cd-drive =/.

Should I try and find an upgrade for that?

EDIT3: Looking at ram prices, it ranges from 180-200 for 2gb, which means I can slap 4gb of dual channel into this machine when the time comes. Coolers start off at $10, then go up to $70...I'm assuming thats because I would be 'buying the brand' (much like intel) - so what sort of RPM should I be looking at?

How many HDD, CD ROMS are you trying to power? on top of your insanely clocked 7800?

My suggestion is to future proof... and go a bigger one... Not only will it make it better for the future, but it will save you a potential blowout / chip burnout / mobo burnout it it does pop. I got a 700W OCZ P/S

Slap the dual core 4800 in and get a stock fan. No need for insane fannage. Waste of cash. IMO

1 Internal HD, about 6 USB plug ins (With usb card thingy), 2 DVD/RW drives and my awesome card which will be sucking up a fair bit too.

I would just use the stock fan...But I bought the cpu off Ebay and it didn't come with a fan at all.
