juggs, what i meant is the SSC has had pretty much everything ripped out that takes up weight, no interior, that sort of thing. with the veyron you get a crazy fast car, that looks and would feel nice inside too.

In fact - the Veyron has had it's ass handed to it on several occassions by several cars now..

Namus - it's been on top gear already... it got beaten by both the gumpert apollo (which I think is fucking cool) and the Caterham R500 (which is even fucking cooler - but there's not a chance in hell of much beating the caterham on a track)..


The only thing the Veyron did was do speed in style. Volkswagen made a ridiculous car - which was never driver focused. There's no denying the crazy engineering, but it's not a car. It's a recliner with wheels and a rocket for an engine..


You take the miniscule differences between the Veyron and one of the most overrated cars of all time (only my opinion) the McLaren F1... The F1 is stripped out, a race car for the road, with the driver and DRIVING in mind. The engine, the lack of sound proofing/comforts, THE DRIVING POSITION - all aimed at the driving experience for the driver. The Veyron tries to do everything fast but stacks on an extra 900Kg so that the driving experience is noticed by the people on the sidewalk.


The Hennessey Viper whooped the Veyrons ass in acceleration AGES ago. find the youtube vid and get some tissues. YES the Hennessey is a PRODUCTION car.

The SSC Ultimate Aero IS AMERICAN,,,, and the interior is shit - but they still broke the top speed of production vehicles AGES ago on a PUBLIC ROAD, not a track... so credit to them for sticking it on an bumpy as fuck road.

I also tip my hat to the test drivers for the SSC when it was testing... In 2007 they hit 240ish mph in icy/snow conditions which is insane... then on their first attempt at a proper top speed run at a track the driver noticed wheelspin when changing into 5th gear (iirc)... (that speed run later cancelled due to rain - so they went and found a long straight bit of road in the desert)

(while I remember , Nick Smolenski of TVR is planning a veyron beater.... with Al Mellings new V8 out.... I'm hoping there's something special coming from TVR)

The Porsche 9ff GT9 has a higher top speed with very similar acceleration. (while being more driver focused)

Al Mellings Hellcat had a higher top speed with similar acceleration - pity he never made the effort to get it recorded legit.. I don't doubt that the rumoured 260mph was wrong though.

Edit - Oh,,, the Porsche GT1 should be out this year too... and likely to have a higher top speed than the Veyron - plus, being a porsche, might handle rather well. (tuned version of the porsche V8,, yes thanks.)


2nd edit - The Barabus TKR is an ugly as sin but fucking quick car that's likely to destroy the veyron too.... the upmarket version has a v8 twin turbo setup - geared for 270ish mph... not tested yet I don't think.

I think 'Keating' bought out two versions of their new car too,, the top end one was supposed to be uber-quick with acceleration, not sure on speed/veyron eating.... it had VERY little info when announced so not sure if you can find anything on it.







Oh while we're talking cars - off topic though - the guy who got me the corp box tickets for the clipsal again this year, is looking at buying a ferrari 355 ..... again... (he sold his other one a few years back complaining it was "A house on wheels you can't live in......"..... then a few months ago he bought a fucking $1.2mil boat called the 'dragonchaser' ... now he's fighting the economic downturn and wants a ferrari again... bastard.)

the GT1 hasn't been released yet xeno,, but yes - I was referring to the other one

really not sure if the gt1 is going to be slippery enough to break 250mph though with a fixed wing (if it gets released with it) - would be too much drag


What I'd love to see is Jaguar bring out a fuckoff supercar again.... their new saloon hit 220mph with some fucking duct-tape for aerodynamics..... given that - I'd say they have a shape worthy of treatment to put their name back on the performance car table

Should probably mention the Ultima car company here too...

If you haven't seen this thing in action - youtube it.

The Ultima GTR has been around for quite a while, in stock form with road tyres, it can reach a little over 231mph.

It is nothing special in terms of engineering - they make it simple so that it works.

They like to stick it to the bigger brands by driving the test car to and from whatever test they are doing - to show it's reliable... they keep the road tyres on, it's all kept stock as it comes from production.


It's consistantly broken records all over the place.

Skidpan (g-force) record was snapped 1.176Gs

0-100-0 was done in 9.4 seconds.

Fastest TOP GEAR track time for last season was on the last show - the caterham went around in 1:17.something....

The ultima (not driven by the stig/ben collins) went around in 1:12.8... to knock 5 seconds off the koenigsegg, caterham, veyron, gumpert - is impressive.


Now they just need to engineer a body for aerodynamics (and a fucking gearbox that has more than 5 gears!!!)





edit - How could I forget...

Caparo T1. Check it out - crazy road car with heavy F1 influence, not sure on top speed but pretty sure it'd kill most cars on tracks that cars stay under 200mph on... eg.. it killed top gears track in 1:10,, I think they were planning on a trip to the N'ring but it may be a little low-slung for the bumpy bits
